Happy Meal Ban Will Limit High-fat Meals
San Francisco has passed what is being called the Happy Meal Ban. Rather than limiting food, the Healthy Meal Motivation act targets the toys. Only certain kid’s meals could be involved within the list of what can include toys. San Francisco is not the first place to enact a Ban like this. In Santa Clara County, a comparable Ban was passed a couple of months ago.
Ban on Happy Meals due to the fat that is so high
The nutrition content of a meal is what the San Francisco’s board of supervisors were thinking about Tues when passing the “Happy Meal Ban”. Restaurants cannot put toys in meals. This is only for some meals though. A meal has to have less than 600 calories, such as the drink, if a company wants to offer a toy. The calories from fat are restricted to 35 within the meal. Finally, a meal must contain a half of a cup of vegetables. A restaurant can have to have a meal with good nutrition if it wants to offer a free toy with the meal.
Meals aren’t prohibited with the Happy Meal Ban
Though the Healthy Meal Incentive legislation is being called the “Happy Meal Ban,” that is a misnomer. Toys aren’t allowed to be offered with meals that aren’t healthy and have high fat and high sugar as part of the Healthy Meal incentive. You will find 2 very different sides of the debate being taken. Some say banning the toys is removing consumer choice and an anti-business move. Others argue that parents who cannot say no to their kids and help their kids make good nutritional choices need education, not legislation. It doesn’t actually matter though. A huge majority passed the legislation.
Healthy Meal Motivation Act following a pattern
The Healthy Meal Incentive legislation wasn’t the first of its kind. Cities have tried to control what is eaten before. In 2006, The Big Apple City passed a Ban on all artificial trans-fats in restaurants. Trans-fats were no longer used by McDonald’s, Taco Bell, Dunkin Donuts, Burger King, Arby’s Applebee’s, Cheesecake Factory and many others. Even Crisco shortening has been reformulated to eliminate trans fats. Will limiting the food we eat with the Healthy Meal Motivation Act be good? Should we stay away from these acts altogether?
